If surge protection is weak, one storm can destroy inverters, controllers and batteries across your whole fleet. Replacement parts may take weeks to arrive at a remote site, and your crews go without power while you wait. That is lost output, downtime and repair costs that proper protection would have prevented.
USP&E Helps You Protect Solar Trailers From Surges
We know that remote sites cannot afford to lose power to the first storm. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers design and maintain hybrid power systems that stay online through rough weather. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
You do not need to over-engineer every trailer. You need good earthing, the right surge devices in the right places, sensible cable routes and simple checks your team repeats after every storm.
Start With Earthing and Bonding
Surge protection only works when it has a good path to earth. Check that each trailer has a proper earth connection, that panel frames and metal structures are bonded together and that trailers on the same network share a common earthing approach.
Measure earth resistance where you can and record it. Dry, rocky or sandy ground often gives poor results, so you may need longer rods, more rods or improved backfill. Recheck after a move, because a trailer’s earth stays behind when it leaves.
Bond the trailers to any other generation on the same network. Different earths at different potentials can push damaging currents through cables between them during a strike. Our hybrid power systems designs plan earthing for every source together.
Fit the Right Surge Devices in the Right Places
Fit surge protective devices on the DC side between panels and inverters, on the AC side at inverter outputs and switchboards, and on communication and control lines. Data cables are easy to forget, and a surge through them can destroy controllers as surely as one through power cables.
Keep cable runs short and route power and data cables together where you can, avoiding large loops that pick up surge energy. Use surge devices rated for your system voltage and expected exposure, and fit them as close as practical to the equipment they protect.
Check surge devices after every storm and on a regular schedule. Many have indicators that show when they have done their job and need replacing. Keep spares on site; a spent device protects nothing. Remote mine power sites often keep a small surge spares kit with each trailer group.
Plan Protection Before Gas Turbines Join
When gas turbine generators join your solar trailers, review earthing and surge protection for the whole network. Switching of large generators and transformers can create surges, and the bigger network has more cable for lightning to find.
Coordinate protection between the turbine, its switchgear and the solar trailers so every device does its part. During the build, short-term bridge power can keep your crews running while new equipment is installed.
Your firming options include a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used/new gas turbines, natural gas engines/stations and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. In hyperscale EPC/O&M, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute need the same careful surge protection. For larger fixed arrays, see our sister site on solar power EPC.
Global Offices Behind Your Solar Trailer Hybrid Programme
Your team wants answers in its own time zone. USP&E’s offices in Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) lead your solar trailer and GT hybrid conversations in the US, from the first data request to the site visit, so questions about fuel, interconnection and delivery are answered by people who can be on site.
The wider network carries the heavy lifting for solar trailers, hybrid controllers and GT firming packages: London (162-168 Regent Street) for structuring and finance, Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) for engineering and project controls, Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) for design and commissioning support, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) for China supply chain and manufacturing.
For surge protection, Colorado Springs and Knoxville engineers can review your trailer earthing and surge devices, then plan protection for the whole network before gas turbines join. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. USP&E’s reach covers 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and the company is ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
What USP&E Has Delivered for Solar Trailer Hybrid Buyers
You want proof that USP&E has delivered power for remote and demanding sites. These projects show that record.
- USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
- Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.
- NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.
HowTo: Protect a Solar Trailer Hybrid from Surges
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your trailer layout, earthing records and storm history. 2. Receive an earthing and surge protection plan. 3. Fit, check after storms and maintain under accountable O&M.
- Assess lightning exposure at the site and the cable runs between trailers and firming plant.
- Fit surge protection on the PV DC side, the inverter AC side and the communications lines.
- Bond trailers, inverters and firming plant to a common earthing system.
- Route and protect cables to keep induced surges low.
- Inspect surge devices after storms and replace failed modules.
- Record every surge event and equipment failure for review.

FAQ: Solar Trailer Surge Protection with GT
Why do solar power trailers need surge protection?
USP&E fits surge protection because trailers sit in open ground with long cable runs and sensitive inverters, which makes them vulnerable to lightning and switching surges. One unprotected strike can destroy inverters, controllers and batteries, leaving crews without power while parts are shipped to site.
Where should surge devices be fitted on a solar trailer?
USP&E fits surge devices on the DC side between panels and inverters, on the AC side at inverter outputs and switchboards, and on communication and control lines. Devices work best close to the equipment they protect and connected to a good earth.
How does earthing affect surge protection?
USP&E treats earthing as the foundation of surge protection. Surge devices send energy to earth, so a poor earth leaves equipment exposed. Trailers should be bonded together and to other generation on the same network, with earth resistance checked after every move.
Do gas turbines change surge protection needs?
USP&E reviews surge protection whenever gas turbines join a solar network, because switching large generators and transformers can create surges and a bigger network has more exposure to lightning. Protection must be coordinated across the turbine, switchgear and every solar trailer.
Where are USP&E’s offices for hybrid power projects?
USP&E supports hybrid power projects from Colorado Springs and Knoxville in the US. London structures contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add engineering and field depth across Africa, and Wuxi follows up inverters, switchgear and equipment made in China.
Has USP&E delivered power for remote sites before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include zero-hour surplus gensets packaged for the Zondereinde mine through load shedding and zero-hour SGT-400 units supplied to NEOM.
Is USP&E a broker for solar trailers?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E designs, builds and maintains hybrid power systems with its own engineers, so the team that plans your surge protection is the same team that fits it, checks it after storms and answers for it.
How fast can USP&E respond after a storm?
USP&E can review storm damage reports, surge device indicators and fault logs as soon as you share them. Engineers advise which equipment is safe to restart, which spares to fit first and when a technician visit is needed to restore protection.
Keep Your Trailers Running Through Every Storm
Protect your trailers well and storms pass without costing you inverters or output. Skip it and one strike can take out the fleet for weeks. USP&E will help you earth, protect and check with confidence.
